Fort Leonard Wood is approximately an hour and a half scenic drive from Atlantis Island Condos and is a “must do” day trip for military history buffs. Originally a basic training center in 1940, today Ft. Wood is the only installation that is home to three Army Schools. The installation represents all branches of service, Army, Marine Corp, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard.

The John B. Mahaffey Museum Complex, located at 495 South Dakota Avenue, Fort Leonard Wood, is home to four museums, that are open to the public, and have no admission fees. The four museums document the history of the fort itself, as well as the history of each of the three Army Schools.

Restored World War II Buildings

The Fort Leonard Wood Museum was established more than 25 years ago and features artifacts from the post’s past. The highlight of this museum is the collection of World War II barracks that depict life at Fort Leonard Wood since the Second World War. Twelve World War II buildings were set aside to preserve the past for future visitors. These buildings include four barracks, two mess halls, three day rooms, two orderly rooms, and a regimental commanders quarters. Exhibits also include artifacts of the Axis prisoner of war camp that housed Italian and German prisoners of war during World War II. This museum also documents the life of the installation’s namesake, Major General Leonard Wood. Major General Leonard Wood was a Medal of Honor recipient, Military Governor of Cuba, and Governor General of the Philippines. In 1910 he was named Chief of Staff of the United States Army, and held this position until 1914. A physician, he is the only medical officer to have ever been named to the Army Chief of Staff position. Fort George G. Meade in Maryland was temporarily renamed Fort Leonard Wood in his honor during the 1920’s but reverted back to it’s current name in the 1930’s. Groundbreaking for Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri was December 3, 1940 and the installation has always retained Major General Leonard Wood as it’s namesake.

The US Army Engineer Museum was established in 1989, as part of the relocation of the Engineer School from Fort Belvoir, Virginia to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. The museum highlights five aspects of the Army’s engineering mission:

The US Army Chemical Corps Museum was relocated from Fort McClellan, Alabama to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri in 1999. The museum is divided into six separate galleries:

Temporary Gallery: The temporary gallery has featured the Second Chemical Mortar Battalion exhibit since October 2004.

June 2008 was the 90th anniversary of the Chemical Corps and also the 10th anniversary of the Civil Support Teams. The Chemical Corps Museum dedicated a new exhibit June 24, 2008 to honor the history of the Civil Support Team.

U.S. Army Military Police Corps Regimental Museum Exhibit

The U.S. Army Military Police Corps Regimental Museum was originally located at Fort Gordon, Georgia and was relocated to Fort McClellan, Alabama in 1975. The museum, along with the United States Army Military Police School, was moved to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri in 1999 due to the closing of Fort McClellan under the 1995 Base Realignment and Closure’s (BRAC) recommendation. The mission of the museum is “ to collect and preserve the material history of the Military Police of the U.S. Army from 1775 to present. The museum also promotes the heritage and traditions of the Military Police branch and the values of the U.S. Army to Soldiers and civilians through public exhibits, educational programs, and branch training support.”

The Pulaski County Courthouse Museum, located in nearby Waynesville, on historic Route 66, also houses an exhibit of interest to military history buffs. The museum features a war room that features military memorabilia from 1776 to the present, with uniforms and items from Fort Leonard Wood.

Activision and Fun Labs bring the plentiful bass fishing of the Lake of the Ozarks to your living room. Recently released “Rapala Fishing Frenzy 2009” allows you to virtually fish six authentic lakes, including Central Missouri’s bass rich Lake of the Ozarks. Fishing Frenzy is rated “E” for everyone and can be played on three consoles, Nintendo’s Wii, the Xbox 360, and Playstation 3.

The game has mixed reviews, mainly due to the game’s identity crisis. Fishing Frenzy has an arcade style feel but also incorporates fishing simulation during play. A big complaint that gamers have is that it is too easy to catch a fish, throwing strategy out the window, and making play unrealistic. A complaint that anglers have is that the length and size of your catch do not jive with real life proportions. The game is tied in to Rapala, the world's largest manufacturer of fishing lures, and lure selection reflects this. Keeping in mind that this game is part of the Activision Value collection, the novelty of fishing The Lake of the Ozarks from my couch, is what hooked me.

Bridal Cave: Things to Do at the Lake of the Ozarks

Bridal Cave is located at 526 Bridal Cave Road, two miles north of Camdenton, approximately 30 miles from Atlantis Island Condos. Daniel Boone’ sons, Nathan and Daniel Morgan, are believed to be the first white men to explore the cave. The pair traveled the Osage River, by canoe, from Defiance to the cave. In 1884 Colonel R.G. Scott purchased 5,400 acres of land in the area. His newly acquired tract of land included Bridal Cave, six additional caves, and Ha Ha Tonka. Colonel Scott was a historian and an influential person of his time, attending at least two receptions at the White House. Colonel Scott discovered the Indian legend of the cave and incorporated the marriage of Irona to Prince Buffalo in the cave into his marketing strategy. The stalactites in the room where the two were wed led to the Bridal Veil Cave name that was later shortened to Bridal Cave.

In 1903 Colonel Scott sold acreage that included Bridal Cave and Ha Ha Tonka to Robert M Snyder, a banker with a colorful history from Kansas City. Mr. Snyder’s main focus of the property seemed to be the bluff overlooking Ha Ha Tonka Spring. He envisioned a large resort on top of the bluff. Mr Snyder did not live to see his vision completed. He`was Kansas City’s first automobile fatality October 27, 1906, while racing another vehicle down Independence Boulevard.

The cave first opened for the general public in 1948, under the direction of Bridal Cave Development Corporation, who continues to operate the cave today. In 1968 the manager of Bridal Cave started the tradition of the “Underground Opinion Poll”. The diversity of tourist who visit the attraction while vacationing at the Lake of the Ozarks has led to the poll being an accurate barometer of the outcome of the Presidential Election. The poll has accurately predicted the outcome of the election since it’s inception. The results of this years unscientific poll show McCain/Palin at 58%, overwhelming Obama/Biden’s 35%.

The cave is a popular choice as a wedding location and over 2000 couples have exchanged vows in the cave. Wedding packages include lifetime passes to the cave for the bride and groom. A 1950’s postcard states “Numerous weddings are performed in the beautiful Bridal Chapel in Bridal Cave every year. Bridal Cave is one of the top tourist attractions of the nation and is visited by thousands, including over ten thousand honeymoon couples annually”.

With a year round temperature of 60 degrees the cave is a respite from the heat during the summer months and comfortable during the other seasons. Vintage postcards advertise “More beautiful formations per square foot than any known cave or cavern.“ Mystery Lake is the newest cavern that has been opened to the public and is a part of the tour. The lake is crystal clear and it has been reported that one can clearly see the pebbles at the bottom of the waters 30 feet below the surface. Bridal Cave is open daily at 9 am, year round, only closing on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Years Day.

Before email and text messaging infiltrated our daily lives, postcards were a simple way to stay in touch with loved ones. Postcards were visual documentation of a family’s travels and also were documentation of national and local landmarks. Deltiology is the official name for postcard collecting and is one of the third largest collectable hobbies along with coin and stamp collecting.

Bagnell Dam was completed and the Lake of the Ozarks began to fill February 1931, which was during the Linen Card Era of postal cards. With The Great Osage River Project having been recognized as one of the greatest engineering and construction feats of its time it was a popular subject for the advanced technology that allowed publishers to print cards on a linen type paper stock with very bright and vivid colors. Bagnell Dam continued to be a popular subject as postal cards advanced into the Modern Photochrome Era. Many shops and tourist attractions along the Bagnell Dam Strip continue to offer postcards today, 77 years after the dams completion.

Wineries near Atlantis Island Condos, Lake of the Ozarks

Missouri vintners have been growing grapes and making wine for a century and a half. Tens of thousands of immigrants from Germany, France, Switzerland, and Austria began pioneering to the state as early as 1821. Missouri offered the promises of fertile soil and plentiful game. Abundant timber and waterways, cheap land, low taxes, and political freedom also sweetened the pot. German immigration boomed in the 1830’s after Godfried Duden returned to Germany, after establishing a farm near present day Dutzow and traveling Missouri, and published a report extolling settling in Missouri. Luckily for us, some of these “followers of Duden”, carried carefully-wrapped clippings from their old world vineyards.

Missouri has seven distinct wine producing regions. The Augusta, Hermann, Ozark Highlands, and Ozark Mountains regions are official American Viticultural Areas. The Lake of the Ozarks is most closely associated as a part of the Ozark Highlands region and also includes the Central Wine region.

Atlantis Island Condos recommends a local four stop wine tour. This trip will take you through historic Linn Creek (Seven Springs Winery), Camden County’s seat of Camdenton (Casa De Loco Winery), the quaint town of Stover (Grey Bear Vineyard’s & Winery), and the location of one of the first battles of the Civil War, Cole Camp (Eichenberg Winery).

Seven Springs Winery website states “Come for the wine, Stay for the atmosphere, Remember the view!”. The wine tasting at Seven Springs will set you back $7, but includes a souvenir wine glass. The winery is home to nine different wines, Sangria Rojo, Concord Grape Juice, and Boulevard Beer for those who prefer grain over grapes. Menu options include selections of appetizers, lite fare, paninis, hand rolls, salads, and specialty soups and the suggested pairings make it easy to choose a wine by the glass or the bottle.

Casa De Loco Winery offers scenic views of the Big Niangua river from a property that has a colorful past. Originally a private fishing resort for wealthy St. Louisian’s the property took a spin as a health care facility for the elderly and the mentally ill during the 1970’s. Hence the name, meaning “house of the crazy”. In addition to wine tastings, Casa De Loco also plays host to Murder Mystery Dinner Theater every other Wednesday night through November.

Grey Bear Vineyards & Winery

Grey Bear Vineyards & Winery has roots in Colorado. The winery itself is architecturally intruiging. The Deltec Home design of round open space can withstand hurricane force winds. This is a popular design style along the coasts but are rare this far inland. The winery offers seventeen wines. Vintner David Fansler has won several awards in both Colorado and Missouri.

Eichenberg Winery started as a grandfather’s way to recreate a portion of his childhood for his grandchildren. Rodger Leutjen recalled playing with his cousins in the tunnels and mazes of the grape wines. The winery building itself was built in the early 1900’s as a blacksmith shop and has been nominated for the National Historic Register. Eichenberg offers ten wine varieties.

Atlantis Island Is Proactive on Safety

The newest Fire Boat, partially funded by Atlantis Island Condos, is docked near the ferry landing

Kernene Shickler, developer of the Atlantis Island Condos project, spoke to Chief Larry Paynter of the Rocky Mount Fire Protection District earlier today. They discussed the process for a 911 emergency on Atlantis Island. Chief Paynter said “the 911 call would come in and be dispatched to Miller County Fire Deptartment. They would dispatch the ambulance that is located at Station #4 on Capple Road right near the Construction Site Bar & Grill at the corner of W and W-12.” The volunteer members would proceed directly from wherever they were to the island and could arrive prior to the ambulance. The ambulance needs to travel about 4 miles. “Some of the volunteers live closer than that”, said Chief Paynter. When the 911 call comes in the Fire Chief would also call the Ferry Captain at Atlantis to coordinate access to the Island. If the Ferry was not available the Fire Boat that is docked on the landing could be used and is equipped with necessary emergency equipment. All the 1st responders are trained in CPR and other emergency skills. When the ambulance arrived it would be equipped with all the same equipment that an ambulance in St. Louis, Chicago or Kansas City would have. He approximated it would probably take 10 minutes for the ambulance to arrive on Atlantis. He said there are some areas of his district where the response time could be over 30 minutes to a location. Atlantis will continue to work with local responders to assure that you can feel safe living on Atlantis Island.

November Events at The Lake of the Ozarks

The Arts and the upcoming holiday season take center stage at The Lake of the Ozarks during the month of November. The first weekend in November still nods to the Harvest Season and Halloween as Captain Ron’s presents their 2nd Annual Spookfest. This Halloween party for adults awards gifts and prizes for best costumes. The Carousel of the Arts Festival, a two month long arts festival celebrating the diversity of visual arts, musical arts, performing arts and literature at Lake of the Ozarks continues through November 20th, and this weekend’s highlight is the Gallery Walk. Gallery Walk features fourteen gallery, or exhibit locations, throughout Osage Beach, representing hundreds of artists. Camden County Museum, in Linn Creek, is the place to be Saturday evening for their Dinner Theater event. Tickets are $15 per person and doors open at 5:30 pm with dinner at 6 p.m. Curtain for John Patrick’s two act comedy, set in the New England hamlet of Beaver Haven, “A Bad Year for Tomatoes” is at 7 p.m. Reservations are suggested and can be made by calling 573-873-5101.

November 8th has a full line up of events. Camden County Museum is another highlight this weekend with their Christmas Craft Fair. Historic downtown Linn Creek is worthy of exploration before heading to the crafter’s paradise at the museum to cross names off of your Christmas shopping list. There is no admission costs associated with this event and lunch is available for a donation. For those who want to slip on their dancing shoes, the Lion’s Club in Lake Ozark is putting on a chili supper and Big Band Dance this evening. Another option this evening, the Show-Me Showboaters Barbershop Chorus perform “College Days”, a reminiscent look back at those good old college years as they sing about the big game, fraternal spirit, and college romances. The performance starts at 7 p.m. at the Royal Theater on the downtown square in Versailles.

The third weekend in November offers two opportunities to give back to the community. Captain Ron’s hosts the 1st Annual Builder’s Ball for Habitat for Humanity. Builders, suppliers, and laborers will be gathering at the popular lakeside bar and grille to donate everything necessary to build the next house for Habitat. Continuing the fundraising efforts for Habitat for Humanity, the Camden County Nationals, a group of area business leaders, take on the Harlem Ambassadors on the hardwood at Camdenton High School Sunday at 3:00 p.m.. The Ambassadors bring high-energy entertainment, dazzling ball-handling tricks, high-flying slam dunks, and hilarious comedy routines to offer the freshest show basketball presentation today.

Camden County Museum continues being in the November spotlight the fourth weekend in November. Gingerbread architecture will be judged at 4 p.m. Saturday. Main Street Music Hall, a live music show, kicks off their Christmas show season this weekend and their second performance starts Saturday night at 8 p.m..

The 23rd Annual Fall Harbor Hop is a poker run on the waters of The Lake of the Ozarks that is always held the second week in October. The First Annual Fall Harbor Hop was organized by Randy Kelly of Kelly’s Marina in 1985 as a vehicle for Lake of the Ozarks Marine Dealer’s Association to draw more visitors during Autumn. Now the Lake of the Ozarks Convention and Visitor’s Bureau manages the event, and has since created the sister event, The Spring Harbor Hop, held the first weekend in May. The Spring Harbor Hop and the Fall Harbor Hop bookend the boating season, although neither mandates the beginning or ending of boating the Lake of the Ozarks.

Both the Spring and Fall Harbor Hops are looked forward to by power boaters and boating enthusiast each year. “Hoppers” draw a playing card at lakeside bars, restaurants, and marinas. The “dealers” locations are along the Main Channel, the Gravois Arm, and the Big Niangua Arm and each location is more than worthy of making it one of your stops. The objective to any poker run, whether on water by boat, or land on motorcycles, is to build a winning poker hand. Start your run at any of the 37 sponsor dealers and draw your first card. The rest of your hand is drawn as you “hop” to 6 other dealer locations and the hand is complete when you draw your seventh card. The completed hand is turned in at the dealer location where you draw your last card. You must turn in your completed hand by 7:00 p.m., Saturday October 11th, 2008 and winners are notified by mail.

Hoppers can play more than one seven card hand (each hand is an optional $15 donation) and new this year, an optional 8th Bonus card can be drawn for an additional $5. Prizes are based on entry donations and Lake of the Ozarks Convention & Visitor Bureau retains sixty percent for administering the program and promoting Lake of the Ozarks. Forty percent will be paid to the participants in the form of gift certificates with the following prize allocations:

1st Place - 10%
2nd Place - 9%
3rd Place - 8%
4th Place - 7% each
5th - 10th Place - 5% each
4 Worst Hands - 4% each
Random Drawing for 10 Hands - 2% each
(all ties will share the allocated percentage for the placing)

In addition to the regular prize winners, a section winner will also be recognized. To be eligible to be a section winner, a player must draw all seven (7) cards within one of the four sections.

Interview with Jenni Dunbar of Under Destruction Racing (Offshore Super Series)

Atlantis Island Condos had the chance to catch up with Jenni Dunbar of Under Destruction Racing after their whirlwind rookie season in the Offshore Super Series. Under Destruction took second place overall in the super vee lite class, missing the National Championship Title to Wild Ride by just one point.

Mark and Jenni are a husband/wife team out of Highlandville, MO. Mark handles the driving chores, while Jenni fulfills the teams “need for speed” with the throttle. Under Destruction’s amazing rookie turnout makes them serious contenders for the 2009 OSS season which kicks off towards the end of March in Biloxi, Mississippi at the Smokin’ The Sound event. Expect to see Mark and Jenni Dunbar at the top of the point standings when the OSS National Championship rolls into Lake of the Ozarks for the finale next season.

Atlantis Island Condos: Wow, what a rookie year! What prompted you and Mark to throw your hats into the ring of powerboat racing?
Jenni Dunbar: We have raced alot of things, Mark races dirt bikes, 4 wheelers and drag cars and I got into racing 4 wheelers about 3 years ago, but as for boat racing we started out as fans. We went to several of the races and got to meet some of the other racers and just decided to give it a try. So far we really enjoy it.

AIC: Under Destruction took two checkered flags in 2008. Which victory was the sweetest for you, Lake Havasu City, or Lake of the Ozarks?
JD: You know both of them were great. Havasu because it was our first win ever was awesome, but also Lake of the Ozarks because it finished out our season and proved that it wasn't just luck on the first win and it made it such a close race for the national championship title. We had no idea where we had ended up in points until the awards and we were pinched out by 1 point.

AIC: Describe the action inside the cockpit during a lap…
JD: The action changes all the time depending on where you are on the course and how many boats are around you. The corners can be quite intense, especially the first one because we are all wanting the same thing, to come out of that first corner in front. We talk alot about where the other boats are, how fast we are going, and we only yell a little! There is a lot to be in control of inside the boat and a lot of gauges and other things to pay attention to.

AIC: There was confusion in some circles (mine included) concerning the National Champion title. Wild Ride took the title in your class (Vee Lite) by just one point. Can you explain the scoring system for those of us who are new fans to the sport?
JD: Points are assesed from each race in the series depending on how you finish. 1st place gets 100 points, 2nd gets 95, 3rd gets 91, 4th gets 88, and so on. You are allowed to miss one race and get last place points, if you miss another you don't get any. The most accumulated points at the last race wins.

AIC: You are the only female "throttle man" on the circuit. Do you think that some of the other teams may have underestimated you and Mark because of this?
JD: Yes I definitely know they did because they told us. They thought Mark was crazy to have me in the boat and that we wouldn't last long. But after the first few races they realized we were here to stay and were a force to be reckoned with. We definitely proved ourselves to the other racers and to ourselves.

AIC: Powerboat racing has been referred to as "NASCAR on the water". What are some of the similarities?
JD: There are more similarities in the super vee lite class than in the others. We actually start in a 2 x 2 grid formation. Our boats all have the same Mercury 525 engines. It is a spec class. We run as hard as our boats will go. We run a points system. We have sponsor stickers all over our boats. And if we happen to crash it would be like hitting concrete.

AIC: What do you think needs to happen to thrust the Offshore Super Series into the national spotlight?
JD: I think we would need better tv coverage, and good race venues where you can see all of the action that our races have to offer, and bigger sponsors to help get offshore racing out to the public to where when you say I'm going to an offshore powerboat race they know exactly what you are talking about.

AIC: If you could have any sponsor in the whole wild world, who would you want it to be?
JD: That’s a difficult one, right now we would just like a big sponsor, but the best sponsor is one that enjoys the sport and wants to be involved in all of the aspects of it. We can give the same advertising exposure as a billboard but ours is traveling and is a fraction of the cost of most businesses advertising expenses for a couple of months and we are seen by 10,000 people or more on a race weekend.

AIC: Any changes being planned for the boat for your sophomore season?
JD: More speed of course, that’s what everyone wants. We are going to do some testing with some different props and just get more comfortable with the boat and replace things that are worn. Just normal maintenance.

2008 Offshore Super Series National Championships Wrap Up

Party Cove moved from Anderson Hollow Cove to The Horny Toad this past weekend. Not really, but that is how it appeared from Atlantis Island Condos as the flotilla of boats paraded past as they headed to the “place to be” September 28th for the Offshore Super Series National Championships. The lake was humming with the collection of Mercury outboards and the excitement of the crowd. The word of the day was “horsepower” and approximately 10,000 spectators got to see just that as Miss Geico officially sewed up her National Championship in the Offshore Super Series Turbine Extreme class for 2008. Miss Geico averaged 122.80 miles per hour, under clear skies and summer like temperatures, beating JBS Racing by 15 seconds.

Under Destruction capped off a stellar rookie year by capturing the checkered flag at the Lake of the Ozarks. This husband/wife team (Mark Dunbar/Driver and Jenni Dunbar/Throttleman) from Highlandville, Missouri are local favorites at The Lake of the Ozarks. The team quickly became a force to be reckoned with during the second race of the OSS season with a first place finish in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. They racked up two fourth place finishes in Biloxi, Mississippi and Kinner, Louisiana. Under Destruction stayed in reach of the number one spot in the standings with two third place finishes in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida and Orange Beach, Alabama. Wild Ride takes the 2008 National Championship in the Vee Lite class by only one point.

What can I fish for at The Lake of the Ozarks?

Fishing near Atlantis Island

The Lake Of The Ozarks is a year round destination for professional and recreational anglers. Several annual tournaments are held in the bass rich waters, including the Big Bass Bash, Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League, and the Stren Bass Series. The plentiful bass include Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Kentucky (Spotted) Bass, Rock (Goggle Eye) Bass, and White Bass.
Crappie fishing also draws a large crowd to the lake. Bass Pro Shops Crappie Masters Tournament usually makes at least one stop on its tour. The crappie normally do not spawn until the Dogwoods bloom, but the hardcore angler knows to look for them near heated fishing docks in the cooler months beginning in October and lasting through March.

Catfish, both Channel and Flathead, offer a different challenge for both seasoned and amateur anglers.

Bluegill can be found all over the lake, especially near docks. Bluegill and perch fishing are fun for all ages but are especially exciting for younger anglers who are just learning to enjoy the sport.

The paddlefish is Missouri’s official aquatic animal and is also known as a spoonbill. Paddlefish are one of the oldest fish known to man. Fossil records show that they first appeared 300 to 400 million years ago, before the first dinosaurs. It is caught by blind snagging. Paddlefish season is March 15 to April 30.

October is host to at least three fishing tournaments. The 23rd Annual Missouri State Buddy Bass Championship is held October 18th and 19th at Deer Valley Park in Sunrise Beach. The 18th Annual White Bass Tournament is a one day event held October 25th at the Gravois Mills Public Access. October 25th also kicks off the 14th Annual Fall Classic Buddy Bass Tournament. This two day event is sponsored by Alhonna Resort in Lake Ozark, less than 5 miles from Atlantis Island Condos.

Zeus was the first completed building on Atlantis Island at the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks. By land, Atlantis Island is located at the end of W-12. The physical address of Zeus is 60 Knox Road, Rocky Mount, MO. Named after the Greek King of the Gods, Zeus was also known as the god of thunder and sky. The moniker fits to a “T” as Zeus is sometimes considered the cornerstone of the Atlantis Island Condos development and also offers owners both stunning cove and main channel views from each unit. This building is adjacent to the pool and piazza, both popular gathering spots for owners and their guests.

Only a few units are still available in this building and Zeus 503 is definitely a gem! This unit is a top floor unit with dramatic cathedral ceilings in the family room and master suite bedroom. This unit is a 3 bedroom, 2 bath and is upgraded with 13” ceramic Tempietto White (hues of pale grey) in the entry way, kitchen, dining area, main bath, and master suite bath. Fall Foliage at The Lake of The Ozarks

The Lake Of The Ozarks is abuzz this week with the OSS National Championships being held this weekend. A few of the boats have been sighted practicing near the waters surrounding Tan-Tar-A Resort and the excitement is almost at a fever pitch. For power boaters, this is Christmas in September and the staff at Atlantis Island Condos are like kids in a candy store!

Another significant event is also taking place this week, although it is being overshadowed by the boat races. Today is the first day of Autumn and people who call the Lake “home” can attest that The Lake Of The Ozarks puts on a world class showing with the colorful leaf displays. The variety of trees lends to the rainbow of colors. Blackgum, Sweet Gum, Hickory, Sassafrass, Maple, Sycamore, Flowering Dogwoods, and Oak are paintbrushes in the autumn palate. Shermanstravel.com has picked the area as a “Top 10 Fall Foliage Destination” and you would be hard pressed to find a leaf peeper who would disagree.

I spoke with KY3’s Morning/Noon Meteorologist, Brandon Beck, via email, last week to get his thoughts on the “state of the leaves” for 2008:

Atlantis Island Condos: We have had a rainy summer. What impact will this have on the leaves during Fall?
Brandon Beck: According to Francis Skalicky from the MO Department of Conservation, the rain we’ve had doesn’t automatically equate to a lot of color. The trees are very healthy because of the moisture, and they’ve got more leaves than they’ve had the last couple of years. But, the COLOR comes from the warm days and cool nights from now through the middle of October.
AIC: How long do you project the Fall foliage "season" to last this year?
BB: Typically the peak of the color lasts a couple weeks.
AIC: When do you think will be the peak "viewing" of the color splashes?
BB: The only thing to go by is the average over the years, which is about the third week of October.

So mark your calendars and make a date with Mother Nature the third week of October to enjoy the brilliant, fiery colors!
